Queensland’s Push for Stronger Domestic Violence Laws: What It Means for Families

April 16, 2025

The Queensland Government has once again placed domestic and family violence in the spotlight, with new reforms aimed at strengthening protections for victim-survivors and holding perpetrators to account.

This latest push follows growing community calls for tougher responses to what remains one of the most pressing social issues in our state. In a recent update shared by 7 News Toowoomba, the government outlines a new legislative agenda that seeks to empower the courts, enhance police responses, and provide greater support for those impacted by domestic violence. These reforms are timely and vital—especially in regional and rural areas like the Darling Downs and Western Queensland, where access to services and support can be limited.

A Clear Message: Violence Will Not Be Tolerated
The Premier and Attorney-General have emphasised that community safety is paramount. Proposed changes include:

  • Stronger penalties  for breaches of Domestic Violence Orders (DVOs)
  • Faster intervention pathways  for police and courts
  • Improved tracking of repeat offenders
  • Greater recognition  of coercive control patterns

These steps signal a commitment to not only protecting those at risk but also reinforcing the seriousness of domestic violence offences in the eyes of the law.

What Does This Mean for Our Clients?
At Wonderley & Hall, we regularly assist clients navigating complex domestic violence matters—whether as applicants seeking protection or respondents looking to understand their rights. Associate James Halliday says: “These proposed reforms represent an important step forward, particularly in improving how coercive control is understood and managed. But laws alone aren’t the solution—accessible legal guidance and strong community support are essential too.” Senior Solicitor Lyn Ha agrees, adding: “Domestic violence is not always physical. Many of our clients are navigating emotional, financial, and psychological abuse, often for the first time. Stronger legal protections provide critical reassurance that they are being heard and protected.”
